UNO Resumes Action at Augustana, Minnesota State

This Week
The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team returns to action this week with duals scheduled against a pair of former North Central Conference foes. UNO will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to battle No. 13 Augustana on Thursday, Feb. 5 before heading to Mankato, Minn. to wrestle No. 3 Minnesota State, Mankato on Feb. 6. Both duals are slated for a 7 p.m. start and will feature a live webcast. Live stats will be available for the dual with Augustana.
Records & Rankings
The Mavericks are currently 8-0 and ranked No. 1 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released on Feb. 4. UNO has nine wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes, including six ranked in the top two. Todd Meneely is ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds, while Cody Garcia (133), Mario Morgan (141), Aaron Denson (165), Ross Taplin (174) and Brent Pankoke (184) are each ranked second. Other ranked Mavericks include third-ranked wrestlers Tony Lewis (285) and Esai Dominguez (149), and No. 5 Jacob Marrs (197).
Augustana is currently 6-5 in duals this season and have dropped three straight. The Vikings are ranked No. 13 and are paced by seventh-ranked wrestlers Ty Copsey (197) and Gavin Nelson (165).
MSU, Mankato has an overall record of 9-3 and have won five straight duals. Mankato is ranked third in the latest NWCA poll and have six ranked wrestlers. The Mavericks are lead by second-ranked wrestlers Tommy Abbott (149) and Brady Wilson (285) and No. 4 John Putnam (141). Other ranked wrestlers include sixth-ranked Pat Mahan (197), No. 7 Travis Elg (157) and No. 8 Andy Forstner (125).
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 30th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 284-109-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
UNO improved to 8-0 this season with a pair of impressive wins at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks dominated No. 5 Central Oklahoma, 43-3, scoring five pins on Friday. Garcia, Meneely, Pankoke, Marrs and Lewis each recorded a pin in the win over the Bronchos.
UNO came back the next night, to defeat the defending NCAA II national champions and interstate rival, Nebraska-Kearney, 26-9. The Mavericks scored a pin by Garcia, a major decision from Morgan and a technical fall from Meneely to lead UNO to victory.
The Mavs also competed in the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend. Tyler Kottas, Nathan Sigman and Elijah Madison each captured titles, as seven Maverick wrestlers placed in the tournament. Other Mavs that placed in the open included Matt Baker, Taylor Escamilla, Ryan Pankoke and Blake Long.

The UNO wrestling team will be idle until they compete in the MIAA Duals on Sunday, Feb. 15 in Warrensburg, Mo. The schools participating in the dual include Central Missouri, Fort Hays State and Truman State.
