UNO Announces 2009 Football Recruits

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha football team announced its class of recruits for the 2009 season today. Head coach Pat Behrns and his staff have signed 14 high school student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to attend UNO in the fall of 2009. An additional six student-athletes will transfer to the roster. The recruits hail from as far away as Georgia and California.
“Looking at our needs and looking at the players we currently have on our roster, I think we accomplished our recruiting goals this year,” said Behrns. “This year, we tried to improve our skill level and our depth at the corner and wide receiver positions. We also brought in some junior college players who will give us some immediate help in both of those positions.”

Included in this latest class of recruits are two quarterbacks, one running back, three defensive linemen, two offensive linemen, one linebacker, four wide receivers and five defensive backs.
Eight of the signees are from Nebraska, and there are two each from Iowa and Missouri. In addition, there is one recruit from Minnesota and one from Kansas.
Those players will join a UNO team that went 7-4 in its first season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and made its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Mavericks now have had 13 consecutive winning seasons under Behrns and have made eight NCAA appearances.
Six of the Nebraska recruits were picked for All-State teams in their classes. In addition, four of the out-of-state signees were also all-staters.
Two of the wide receivers are from outside Nebraska. Michael Heumann was a team captain at Lindbergh High School in St. Louis. He had 44 catches for 648 yards last season. Brayde Lipp was an all-state honorable mention while making 27 catches for 538 yards and nine touchdowns for Sartell (Minn.) High School. In addition, Nebraska native Justin Coleman was a two-time all-state selection and had 2,800 all-purpose yards in his senior year at Beatrice High School.
The transfers include two cornerbacks, one quarterback, one wide receiver, one defensive back and one linebacker. Robert Stroup joins UNO from former North Central Conference rival North Dakota where he was second team all-conference in 2007.
