Mavericks Named All-Academic Wrestlers

OMAHA, Neb. - Nine members of UNO's national championship wrestling team have been named 2008-09 Division II All-Academic honorees. The selections are made by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. For many of the Mavericks, it is not their first time on the list.
Senior Ross Taplin and junior Cody Garcia were named first team All-Academic selections for the third year. They're joined by juniors Jacob Marrs, who has earned his second selection, and Brent Pankoke who earned his first selection. The Mavericks have more first team picks than any other school.
Sophomores Ryan Pankoke and Matt Rein and freshman Nathan Sigman were all chosen for the second team All-Academic roster. Pankoke is making his second appearance on that squad while it's a first-time honor for Rein and Sigman.
Sophomores Josh Heckendorn and Tait Weatherbee were both honorable mention picks for the second time in their careers.
As a team, UNO ranked eighth in the nation with a 3.211 grade point average. Truman State University, a fellow member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, led the nation with a team GPA of 3.467.
