Maverick Golfers Win First Event of Spring Season

WAYNE, Neb. - Junior #Abbey Weddle# led wire to wire to lead the UNO golf team to a first-place finish at the Wayne State Invite on Monday. The win was the first of the spring season for the Mavericks. They've now won four straight tournaments dating back to last fall.
UNO won the event with a team score of 650. The University of Nebraska-Kearney finished in second at 700 followed by host Wayne State at 704. Morningside College was fourth with a team tally of 761, and Wayne State's JV team finished in fifth at 788.
Weddle took first overall after firing a 78 today. She finished the two-day event with a score of 157 after shooting 79 on day one. #Dani Suponchick# finished in second overall. She shot 80 on Monday for a two-day total of 163. UNK's Sara Wissing was the only player in the top five not from UNO. She shot 81 today to finish at 165, good for third place.
UNO's #Amy Powell# was in fourth after tying Weddle for the low round of the day at 78, a ten-shot improvement over her day-one round. She finished with a two-day total of 166. #Rebecca Pollock finished in fifth with a combined score of 167 while Erin Ommen# tied for sixth with Wayne State's Kelsee Katsampes. Both golfers finished at 168.
The Mavericks return to action on Sunday, March 29 on the West Coast. They'll take part in the FEEL GOOD/Lady Otter Spring Invitational in Seaside, Calif. The tournament is hosted by California State University Monterey Bay.
