Three Mavs Earn MIAA Athlete of the Week Nods

OMAHA, Neb. – Three UNO student athletes earned athlete of the week honors in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association on Tuesday. Maverick softball player #Beth Haley#, baseball player #Ben Percival and golfer Abbey Weddle# all picked up the honors based on their play last week.
Percival set a new team season-high with 13 strikeouts in a 4-1 win over Pittsburg State in the second game of a doubleheader on March 28. He pitched a complete game, three hitter and allowed just one run to boost his record to 7-0. The native of Clive, Iowa is tied for the league lead in wins and has pitched a league-high 50 innings.
Percival is the second Maverick baseball player to earn the honor. Second baseman Andrew Hansen was named the MIAA's hitter of the week just last week.
Weddle led the Mavericks to a win at the Wayne State Invite in their first tournament of the spring season. She went wire to wire, posting a score of 157, to finish as the individual medalist. The Mavericks won by 50 strokes.
The UNO baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 when it hosts Missouri Western in a doubleheader at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The UNO golf team plays its only home tournament of the season on Sunday and Monday, April 5 and 6, when it hosts the Ironwood UNO Collegiate Invitational at Ironwood Country Club.
Haley had a win and a save, both in relief as the 23rd-ranked Mavericks swept Wayne State (Neb.) by identical 2-1 scores Wednesday. She had a 0.00 ERA and allowed just one hit in five innings. Haley entered the first game in the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1 and a runner on first. She ended the inning with the next batter and then she shut down the Wildcats in the final three innings, allowing no hits and facing the minimum as UNO won in extra innings.
In the second game Haley came in and allowed a single to load the bases but got the next batter to ground into a double play to end the inning. Haley put two runners on in the seventh inning but another double play and then a strikeout ended the game to give her the first save of the year for UNO.
This is the second such honor for Haley this year and the third overall for the UNO softball team.
