Maverick Golf Team Wins MIAA Title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UNO golf team completed a wire-to-wire win and earned its first ever Mid-America Intercollegiate Championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Shoal Creek Golf Club. #Erin Ommen# was the individual medalist with a two-day score of 153 as the Mavericks earned the top four individual spots.
The MIAA championship for the golf team is the second league title for a UNO team this year. UNO's indoor track and field team took first place at the MIAA Championship on March 1. The title is the first awarded by the MIAA for women's golf.
The Mavs finished with a two-day team total of 651, putting them 27 strokes ahead of second-place Truman State which finished at 678. Missouri Western was third at 758, and Northwest Missouri State finished in fourth at 778.
For the second day in a row, Ommen finished with the low round of the day with a 78. #Dani Suponchick# was second overall with a score of 164. She shot an 81 during second round play. #Abbey Weddle and Rebecca Pollock# tied for third at 167. Weddle shaved nine strokes off her day one score by shooting a 79 on Tuesday, the second best round of the day. #Amy Powell# finished in 12th overall with a total of 182.
Ommen, Suponchick, Weddle and Pollock also were named to the All-Tournament team.
In addition, head coach #Tim Nelson# was named the MIAA women's coach fo the year.
The Mavericks will now prepare to host the Division II West Regional at Ironwood Golf and Country Club from May 4 through May 6.
