Lindenwood Dual and Brand Open On The Docket For M

Lindenwood/Brand Open Notes
The top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha wrestling team (4-0) will host two events this weekend. On Jan. 15, Lindenwood (4-1) visits Omaha for UNO's first home dual of the 2009-10 season. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Sapp Fieldhouse. The 2010 Brand Open will follow on Jan. 16. Wrestling will get underway at 9 a.m.
Last Week
The top-ranked Mavericks repeated as champions and won their fifth NWCA National Duals title in school history on Jan. 10 in Cedar Falls at the UNI-Dome. The Mavericks defeated Newberry for the second-straight season in the finals, this time by a score of 25-6.
The Mavericks opened the duals with a 38-6 win over Mercyhurst. UNO met former NCC rival St. Cloud State in the second round. The Huskies, ranked ninth in the nation coming into the duals, were handed a 27-12 loss. The 12 points the Mavs surrendered were the most that they gave up on the weekend in their four dual contests.
In the semifinals, UNO once again met a familiar foe, this time the Mavericks of Minnesota State. UNO had no problem with 12th-ranked MSU, dismantling it, 30-6.
UNO grapplers competed in 40 matches on the weekend, winning 32 of them. Terrell McKinney (125), Cody Garcia (133), Mario Morgan (141), George Ivanov (157) and Jacob Marrs (197) all went 4-0. Ryan Pankoke (165) and Elijah Madison (285) both went 3-1. Brett Rosedale (174) went 2-1 and Tait Weatherbee (149) went 2-2 filling in for injured All-American Esai Dominguez.
A Look At The Lions
Lindenwood is 4-1 on the season, and along with the Mavericks, opened dual competition last weekend at the NWCA National Duals. The Lions turned in a fifth-place showing after edging Southern Oregon, 20-16. The Lindenwood wrestling squad won its third-straight NAIA national championship title last season with three Lions claiming individual titles.

Friday's showdown in Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse will mark the first ever meeting between the two school.

Friday's dual with Lindenwood can be seen live on NET2, which can be found on channel 16 of the Cox Cable lineup. Torri Pantaleon will call the action with former UNO standout Pat Kelley III providing the color commentary. UNO TV will be producing the broadcast.

Mike Denney is in his 31st season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 293-109-5 (.726) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
Lindenwood is led by 11-year head coach Joe Parisi. He has led the Lions to five NAIA National Championships, two NAIA runner-up finishes, three NAIA National Duals Championships and two NAIA National Duals second-place showings. He has coached 115 All-Americans, 28 national champions and has been named the National Coach of the Year five times.

The Mavericks will head to the Land of 10,000 Lakes next weekend for a pair of road duals. On Friday, Jan. 22, UNO will square off with Augsburg in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. From there, the Mavs will head northwest en route to St. Cloud, Minn., for a match with the Huskies. The dual is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Halenbeck Hall.
