Mavericks Head To Iowa State This Weekend

The Week Ahead: The University of Nebraska at Omaha track team will take part in the Iowa State Open on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 and 23. Action begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 9:50 p.m. at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
The Coaches: Steve Smith is in his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Nebraska at Omaha track program after more than two decades of success as an assistant in Kansas, Lincoln and at UNO. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocation indoor Coach of the Year after guiding the Mavericks to a stunning win in the 2009 MIAA Indoor Championships in March. Four Mavericks earned indoor All-American status under his direction, and sprinter #Pinar Saka# was named the Division II Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. He also was named the North Central Conference Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2007. He is assisted by #Chris Richardson# (jumps and pentathlon/heptathlon), John Mulligan (distances) and Rich Emsick (throws).
Already In: Shot putter #Heather Minssen# has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship. She posted the best throw in the nation on Jan. 16 with a toss of 48 feet, 11 1/2 inches at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Nebraska. Sprinter Maja Mihalenic qualified provisionally for the 200 meters with a time of 24.91 on Jan. 16 as well.
School Record: Junior #Anja Puc# set a new school record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:54.57 to win the event at the Holiday Inn Invitational on Jan. 15. She beat the old school record by more than two seconds. For her performance, she was named the MIAA's Track Co-Athlete of the Week along with Missouri Southern's Kimi Shank. Puc already holds the school record in the 800 meters (2:05.91).
What's Next: The Mavericks will take part in two meets next week. Some athletes will compete in the Jayhawk Invite on Friday, Jan. 29 at Kansas. Others will toe the line at the Husker Multi Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29 and 30 at Lincoln.
