Pair Of Road Duals Await Top-Ranked Mavericks

Weekly Wrestling Notes
The top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha wrestling team (5-0) will head to the Land of 10,000 Lakes this weekend for a pair of duals. On Friday, Jan. 22, UNO will battle top-ranked Division III school Augsburg College (8-0) in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. From there, the Mavs will head northwest en route to St. Cloud, Minn., for a match with the No. 8 Huskies (9-4). The dual is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Halenbeck Hall.
Last Week
UNO hosted two events last weekend. On Friday, Jan. 15, Lindenwood visited for a dual contest. The Mavs had no problem with the defending NAIA champions, winning in dominating fashion, 40-3.
On Jan. 16, Cody Garcia won his sixth tournament of the season at the 2010 Brand Open. Garcia went 4-0 on the day and defeated Tyler Clark 5-2 in a hard-fought championship match at 133 pounds. Clark was competing unattached, but is from the University of Iowa. Garcia won Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament and Kyle Detmer of Oklahoma took home the Most Falls award with four pins in 10:36.
Redshirt freshman Tim Chavez and sophomore Austin Boehm collected second-place finishes. Chavez went 2-1 at 141 pounds and was defeated by Nick Lester of Oklahoma 8-3 in the championship match.
Ryan Loder of the University of Northern Iowa handed Boehm a 14-3 loss in the championship match at 184 pounds. Boehm went 3-1 on the day. Blake Long took second place at 197 pounds. He went 2-1 on the day. Tyler Kottas and Nathan Sigman shared fifth-place honors at 157 pounds.
Junior Josh Heckendorn went 2-2 on the day and picked up a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds. Mark Fiala earned a third-place finish wrestling unattached. He went 5-1 and beat teammate Brett Rosedale in the third-place match. Tait Weatherbee (149), Rosedale (184), Matt Baker (184) and Taylor Escamilla (285) all picked up fourth-place finishes.
A Look At The Auggies and Huskies
Augsburg is 8-0 on the year and is the top-ranked team in Division III. Eight of Augsburg's wrestlers are ranked in their weight class. St. Cloud State is 9-4 on the year and has won three-straight duals. The Huskies are ranked eighth in DII and have five wrestlers ranked individually.
The Dual History
The Mavericks and Auggies will meet for the sixth time ever on Jan. 22. Augsburg College owns the series advantage. The Mavs won the last meeting, which took place Jan. 23, 2009, 28-9, in Omaha.
UNO is 27-3-1 all-time against St. Cloud State. The two teams met earlier this month on Jan. 9 at the NWCA Duals. The Mavericks handed the Huskies a 27-12 defeat. It marked the 11-straight dual victory UNO has collected over SCSU. In those 11-straight wins, the Mavs have outscored the Huskies 377-80. SCSU's last win over UNO came on Jan. 16, 1999 with the Huskies handing the Mavs a 23-16 loss.

The Coaches
Mike Denney is in his 31st season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 294-109-5 (.727) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
Augsburg is guided by second-year head coach Mark Matzek. He has led the Auggies to a 19-2 record while at the helm.
The Huskies are led by fourth-year head coach Steve Costanzo. He is a 1996 graduate of UNO and was on the Maverick wrestling team from 1992-1995. Costanzo record at SCSU stands at 34-18.
The Streak
The Mavericks have won 18-straight dual matches in a row dating back to last season after a perfect 13-0 season. Northern Iowa is the last team to beat UNO in a dual match. The Panthers defeated the Mavs 22-15 in Omaha on Feb. 21, 2008. UNO's longest dual winning streak in school history is 19 which took place from 1969-1971. Riding a 19 dual match winning streak, UNO tied Navy 17-17 to end the winning streak. UNO went on to win six more duals, bringing its unbeaten streak to 26-straight dual wins until Northern Colorado finally ended the run.
What's On Tap?
The Mavericks will be on the road again for a pair of duals and an open tournament next weekend. On Friday, Jan. 29, UNO will head to Edmond, Okla., to battle Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Saturday night, the Mavs will square off will intrastate rival Nebraska-Kearney. The dual is slated for 7 p.m. at the Heath and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb. UNO will also send wrestlers to the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 30.
