Weekly Wrestling Notes
The top-ranked Mavericks (6-1) will close out the month of January with a pair of duals and an open tournament this weekend. On Friday, Jan. 29, UNO will head to Edmond, Okla., to battle No. 11 Central Oklahoma (6-5) at 7 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House. Saturday night, the Mavs will square off will intrastate rival (No. 9) Nebraska-Kearney (10-5). The dual is slated for 7 p.m. at the Heath and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb. UNO will also send wrestlers to the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 30 at 9 a.m.
Last Week
In the battle of the top-ranked wrestling teams in NCAA Division II and III, it was the Augsburg Auggies (9-0) who came away with the dual victory over Nebraska-Omaha in Friday night's (Jan. 22) showdown in Minneapolis, 18-12. The loss snapped the Mavericks' 18-straight dual match winning streak, which was the longest since 1969-1971 when UNO won 19 duals in a row. It's the first time UNO lost a dual since Feb. 21, 2008 when Northern Iowa defeated the Mavericks, 22-15.
The Auggies won six of 10 matches and scored the most points (18) that UNO has surrendered all season.
The Mavs rebounded from its loss to Augsburg on Jan. 22 with a dominating 34-9 victory over the eighth-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (9-6) on Jan. 23 in St. Cloud, Minn. It's the second time this season that UNO has defeated SCSU, with the two last meeting on Jan. 9 at the NWCA National Duals. The win marks the 12th-straight dual win for the Mavericks against the Huskies. UNO won eight of 10 matches in the dual, including seven in a row.
A Look At The Bronchos and Lopers
Central Oklahoma is ranked 11th in the latest NWCA poll,and 6-5 in duals on the season. The Bronchos are coming off a 37-9 win over New Mexico Highlands University on Jan. 22 and are 4-4 in the month of January.
Nebraska-Kearney (10-5) will enter Saturday night's match with UNO as winners of its last five duals, including four wins last week at Central Missouri's Dual Jamboree. UNK's last loss came at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners 34-4 on Jan. 16. The Lopers are ranked ninth in the latest NWCA poll.
The Dual History
The Mavericks and Bronchos will face each other for the 26th time on Friday. UNO has won 13 of the duals, including the last meeting on Jan. 30, 2009 when the Mavs blasted the Bronchos, 43-3. Central Oklahoma's last win over UNO was on Feb. 2, 2007 with a 22-14 defeat of the Mavs.
Saturday's showdown will mark the 27 time that UNO and UNK will meet. The Mavericks have collected 22 wins all-time over the Lopers. UNO defeated UNK last season, 26-9, on Jan. 31. The Lopers last win over the Mavs was on Feb. 3, 2007, 18-16.

Mike Denney is in his 31st season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 295-110-5 (.726) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
Central Oklahoma is led by David James who is in his 28th season as head coach. James' career record at UCO stands at 324-116-5.
The Lopers are guided by Marc Bauer who is in his 10th season. He has a career mark of 131-59 in duals while at the helm of the UNK wrestling program.
Dual Delight
The Mavericks are 6-1 in dual meets this season. UNO grapplers are 53-17 (.757) in the 70 matches they have wrestled in. The Mavericks have outscored their opponents 206-60 on the year through seven duals. The 40 points the Mavs put up in their win over Lindenwood on Jan. 15 is the highest output of the season. When Augsburg amassed 18 points in its win over UNO on Jan. 22, it marked the most points surrendered by the Mavs all year.
