Mavs Gear Up For 2010 NWCA National Duals

UNO Wrestling Weekly Release - 2010 NWCA National Duals
Top-ranked UNO (0-0) will compete at the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 9-10 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The two-day annual tournament features top wrestlers from each collegiate athletic division (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, JUCO and Women's). The top-seeded Mavericks will face Mercyhurst (2-2) in the first round of action on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. UNO will face either San Francisco State or eighth-seed St. Cloud State on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m.
The Division II field includes eight of the top 10 ranked teams in the most recent NWCA DII coaches poll released Jan. 5. Augustana, Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, Fort Hays State, Gannon, Mercyhurst, Minnesota State-Mankato, Newberry, San Francisco State, St. Cloud State, West Liberty, Western State College, Wisconsin Parkside, Nebraska-Kearney and Upper Iowa will battle the Mavericks for the title. Results will be available at www.unipanthers.com throughout the tournament.
Last Week
The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling squad hit the mat on Saturday, Jan. 2 for its first action of the new year at the Ron Beaman Open hosted by Dana College. A near three-week break from action didn't seem to slow down the Mavericks as six grapplers earned titles on the day.
Senior Cody Garcia continued to own the mat as he's done all year, going 5-0 on the day with four pins to garner his fifth first-place finish of the season. He battled and beat Spenser Mango in the 133-pound championship match by fall at 5:13. Mango was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team
at the Summer Olympics held in Beijing. He wrestled at 121 pounds for Team USA.
Garcia is now 24-0 on the season with 19 of those wins coming via pin. Garcia has three or more pins in all five tournaments that he has competed in this season (Daktronics Open (3), Harold Nichols Open (4), Fort Hays Open (4) Loper Open (4) and Ron Beaman (4)).
Terrell McKinney (125) and George Ivanov (157) each went 4-0 on the day to claim first. It marked the first time the two redshirt freshmen have won a tournament as a Maverick.
Ryan Pankoke won four matches on the day en route to a first-place finish at 165 pounds. Pankoke has now claimed first in his last two tournaments.
Jacob Marrs (197) and Elijah Madison (285) both went 4-0 and collected first-place finishes. Mario Morgan collected the title at 141 pounds wrestling unattached.
A Look At The Lakers
Mercyhurst is coming off a 40-6 defeat of Mercyhurst North East on Dec. 19 at the Seton Hill Quad Meet. The Lakers have a 2-2 record on the season with losses coming to West Liberty State and East Stroudsburg.
The Maverick and Laker History
UNO and Mercyhurst have a brief history of facing each other on the mat. The two teams have squared off just two times all-time with the Mavs winning both meetings. Their most recent battle was in the second round of last year's NWCA National Duals where the Mavs rolled to a 31-7 win that propelled them into the semifinal round against Minnesota State.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 31st season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 289-109-5 (.723) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
UNO's History At The NWCA Duals
The Mavericks have fared well at the NWCA National Duals in the past. UNO has captured the DII crown four times, most recently last season with a 23-19 defeat of Newberry on Jan. 11, 2009. The Mavs won the tournament in 2006, 2005 and 1997. In 2006, UNO beat Minnesota State in the championship round, 20-10. In 2005, the Mavs edged Augustana, 20-18, in the final round. UNO has also finished runner-up four times - 2008, 2007, 2003 and 1999.

What's On Tap?
The Mavericks will host two events next week. On Jan. 15, Lindenwood visits for UNO's first home dual of the 2009-10 season. The dual match is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Sapp Fieldhouse. The 2010 Brand Open will follow on Jan. 16. Wrestling will get underway at 9 a.m.
