Mavericks Close Season at Truman State

The University of Nebraska at Omaha football team closes its 2010 schedule with an MIAA game at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., on Saturday, Nov. 13. Kickoff at Stokes Stadium (4,000) will be at 2:20 p.m. The game will be televised by the MIAA Network. It will be broadcast locally on the radio on KVNO, 90.7 FM.
The Records
UNO enters the MIAA contest at 4-6 overall and 4-4, fifth place, in the MIAA. Truman is 4-6 overall and is 2-6 in the MIAA. The Mavericks are coming off a loss at home, while the Bulldogs have lost two straight games.
The Series
UNO holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series, which began in 1981, and is 1-2 at Truman. The schools have split two MIAA meetings, with UNO winning last year in Omaha, 38-0. Truman claimed a 26-20 win in 2008.
Last Week
Nebraska-Omaha closed its home schedule with a 16-14 loss to Missouri Western on Drew Newhart's 11-yard TD pass to Adam Clausen with 16 seconds left. After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded second-period touchdowns. UNO scored first on QB John Teigland's 11-yard pass to tight end Mike Higgins and four minutes later Newhart passed five yards to Andrew Mead to tie the game. Missouri Western took its first lead on a 49-yard field goal by Brad Beckwith with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter. UNO then marched 89 yards in 11 plays to take a 14-10 lead with 1:39 to play on Teigland's one-yard dive. The Griffons went 64 yards in seven plays to snatch the win. Levi Terrell led UNO with 115 rushing yards on 19 carries. Teigland completed 10 of 19 passes for 164 yards.
Truman State fell to host Pittsburg State, 17-14, as the Bulldogs' Derek Koon narrowly missed a 36-yard field goal attempt as time expired. Truman QB Phil Davis passed 15 yards to Kendrick Blue to pull TSU within 17-14 with 4:50 to play. Truman outgained Pitt State, 376-241. Davis passed for 210 yards and ran for 71 on 22 carries. Will Mosquera led the Bulldogs' ground attack with 74 yards on 16 attempts.
The Coaches
Pat Behrns, the winningest football coach in UNO history, is now in his 17th UNO season and will bring a 123-68 (.644) record into Saturday's game at Central Missouri. The 1972 graduate of Dakota State College has led UNO to 14 consecutive winning seasons and eight appearances in the NCAA playoffs. The Mavs also have won seven conference titles. Behrns, a native of David City, Neb., has a career record of 159-95 (.626) in 22 seasons as a head coach at both UNO and North Dakota. Behrns is 1-1 vs. TSU. Truman State had coach Gregg Nesbitt, a 1980 TSU alum, is in his first season in charge of the football program at the school. He has a 4-6 overall record. Nesbitt has been the defensive coordinator at TSU (1990-93), Central Methodist University (2006) and Central Missouri (2007-09) He also was a high school coach in Missouri at Hickman (1993-2005) and Hannibal (1984-89).

KVNO (90.7 FM), “The Voice of UNO Athletics,” will carry the game live. David Gustafson provides the play-by-play while former UNO All-American offensive lineman Chris Bober offers analysis, and Jon Schriner reports from the sidelines.
