Mavs Travel to Ames for Nichols Open on Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO wrestling team will travel to Ames, Iowa, on Saturday to compete in the Harold Nichols Open hosted by Iowa State. The Mavericks will begin competition at 9 a.m.
What Happened Last Week
Senior Aaron Denson and junior Esai Dominguez earned first-place finishes at the season-opening Daktronics Open hosed by South Dakota State University last Saturday.
Denson captured the title at 184 pounds, going 4-0 to open his senior season. He defeated North Dakota State's John Gusewelle in a fall at 5:50, and then took down Joe Piro in the semi-finals at 2:41. Denson won the final match in a 6-5 decision over NDSU's Kenny Moenkedick to earn his 93rd victory as a Maverick.
Dominguez defeated North Dakota State's Nash Hallfrischand in the semifinals to reach 70 wins in his career on Saturday. He finished 4-0 to earn the title at 149 pounds after winning a 5-4 decision against NDSU's Andre Patselov in the finals.
At 174 pounds, Mark Fiala went 4-1 for a third-place finish. Josh Keszler competed unattached at 133 pounds and finished with a 3-1mark, good for second-place.

Mike Denney is in his 32nd season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 289-109-5 (.723) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
Whats Next
UNO will host the annual Kaufman-Glen Brand Open on Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse. Attracting 500-700 wrestlers from 35 teams in 12 states, the meet is held each November.
The meet originally named the UNO Open was renamed after the late Ryan Kaufman, a former Maverick All-American, National Champion and UNO athletic Hall of Fame member. Kaufman, an Omaha firefighter, was killed in a traffic accident in early 1991.
Glen Brand, an Omaha resident and former Olympic champion, has given financial support to the tournament and also sponsors the Glen Brand Open, held at UNO each January.
