Mavs Set To Host 28th Annual Kaufman-Brand Open

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team is set to host the annual Kaufman-Brand Open on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse. Attracting athletes from 35 teams in 12 states, the annual open is expected to include nearly 700 wrestlers on Saturday.
The meet, originally named the UNO Open, was renamed after the late Ryan Kaufman, a former
Maverick All-American, National Champion and UNO athletic Hall of Fame member. Kaufman, an
Omaha firefighter, was killed in a traffic accident in early 1991.
Glen Brand, an Omaha resident and former Olympic champion, had given financial support to the
tournament and also sponsors the Glen Brand Open, held at UNO each January.
What Happened Last Week
The Mavericks captured two individual titles and placed six athletes at the Harold Nichols Open
hosted by Iowa State last Saturday. Junior Esai Dominguez earned his second title of the season and
sophomore George Ivanov captured his first.
Dominguez improved to 9-0 on the year, winning five matches on his way to the 149 pound
title. In the finals, he defeated Justin DeAngelis from the University of Oklahoma by the score of 5-2.
The former Creighton Prep standout is now ranked No.1 in the latest NCAA D-II poll and has a career
record of 77-23 as a Maverick.
Ivanov, a Council Bluffs native, was crowned champion in the 157 pound weight class, going 5-0
against the competition. He downed Iowa State's Trent Weatherman in the finals, 11-6, to maintain
his No. 1 ranking in the NCAA D-II polls.
Senior Ryan Pankoke went 4-1 against his opponents and reached the finals but fell to John
Reader of Iowa State in the 165 pound finals. Pankoke is currently ranked No. 2 in NCAA D-II.
Aaron Denson has posted a 8-2 record so far in 2010 and opened his senior season with a 4-0
finish at the Daktronics Open hosted by South Dakota State on Nov. 6. Denson captured the title at
184 pounds, defeating North Dakota State's Kenny Moenkedick in a 6-5 decision.

Mike Denney is in his 32nd season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate
has a 289-109-5 (.723) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three
times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010 Mavericks to a NCAA Division II national
championship.
Next Up for the Mavericks
UNO will remain idle until Saturday, Dec. 4 when the team travels to Hays, Kan. to compete in
the Hays Open beginning at 9 a.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Last season, eight Mavericks placed out of more than 350 athletes in action. Terrell McKinney
(125 pounds), George Ivanov (157 pounds), Ryan Pankoke (165 pounds) and Taylor Escamilla
(heavy weight) all collected fourth-place finishes.
