Kaufman-Brand Open Amateur Bracket Final Results
OMAHA, Neb. – Ryan Pankoke and Mark Fiala finished in third place, and a total of six UNO wrestlers placed Saturday at the Kaufman-Brand Open at Sapp Fieldhouse. More than 700 wrestlers representing 35 teams came from 12 different states to compete.
In addition to Pankoke and Fiala, Kevin Barrett, Trent Cox, George Ivanov and Mario Morgan all advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight brackets.
Pankoke, a senior from Beaver Crossing, Neb., led all Mavs with a third-place finish in the 174-pound Elite bracket. Pankoke won his first three matches before falling in the semifinals. Pankoke rebounded with two more wins, including a 7-4 decision in his third-place match against Clayton Gable of Air Force.
Fiala, a redshirt freshman from Seward, Neb., also finished in third place with a 9-4 decision over Patrick Spano of Kansas City in the 174-pound Amateur bracket. Fiala made it through the championship bracket unscathed until the semifinals, where he dropped his one and only match of the day to eventual champion Mike Evans of Iowa, 9-1.
Barrett, a true freshman from Boys Town, Neb., finished in fourth place in the 197-pound Amateur bracket after forfeiting his third-place match late Saturday night. Wrestling unattached, Barrett won a high-scoring affair over Leland Pfeifer of Wyoming, 19-13, to get into the third-place match. Barrett finished with a 4-2 record.
Mario Morgan placed fifth in the 141-pound Elite bracket after posting a 4-2 record, while Trent Cox placed sixth with a 4-2 record in the 133-pound Amateur bracket. Ivanov, in the 157-pound Elite bracket, won his first three matches but was unable to continue once he reached the semifinals, dropping out of the rest of his matches. Ivanov still earned a sixth-place finish.
Among other UNO wrestlers standing out in the competition, Cody Tyler won six matches in the125-pound Amateur bracket and Josh Keszler won five at the 133-pound Amateur bracket before both were eliminated in the consolation rounds.
