Mavericks Lead After First Day of Mutual of Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- The UNO swimming & diving team swam to eight first-place finishes for first place overall in the first session of the Mutual of Omaha Invitational at the HPER Pool on Friday.
The Mavs earned top honors in the 200 freestyle relay, 400 individual medley, 100 yard breaststroke, 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard backstroke, 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard medley relay.
The 200 free relay team of Tiesha Scipio, Kylie Rathbone, Colleen Klaiber and Cait Hopkins swam to a time of 1:36.64. Katie Keen took first in the 400 IM in 4:45.59, while Laura Kemp clocked in at 1:06.17 to grab the 100 breaststroke title. Rathbone added another win in the 50 free (24.44), and Klaiber grabbed the 100 butterfly crown with a time of 59.80.
Amy Bechdolt chipped in a top time in the 200 breaststroke at 2:14.95, and Hopkins finished off with a first-place performance in the 200 freestyle (1:54.45). The Nebraska-Omaha 400 medley relay team also turned in a mark of 4:01.38 to cap the day.
Entering the final day of competition, the Mavericks sit in first place in the team standings with 833 points. Minnesota State-Moorhead sits in second with 470, followed by Colorado Swim Club (290), Morningside College (113), Nebraska-Kearney (103), Iowa Central Community College (61), Kansas Swim Club (52), College of St. Mary (52) and Simpson College (13).
The Mutual of Omaha Invite wraps up Saturday, Dec. 4 at the HPER Pool on the UNO campus. Preliminaries are slated for at 9 a.m. and finals are set for 5 p.m.
