Mavs Return to Mat at Viking-Warrior Open

The No. 1 UNO wrestling team returns to the mat after a three-week break this Sunday, Jan. 2, at the Viking-Warrior Open at Midland University in Fremont, Neb. The first matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
The Mavericks are coming off a solid outing at the Loper Open on Dec. 12, in which five wrestlers took first place and 11 total Maverick wrestlers placed.
Esai Dominguez led the way at the Loper Open with his fourth open title on the year at 149 pounds. Dominguez won by fall over Brandon Richardson of Wyoming in the finals and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.
Mario Morgan (141), Ryan Pankoke (174), Matt Baker (197), and Taylor Escamilla (285) also won their respective weight groups. Morgan and Baker took home titles by injury default in the finals, while Pankoke won a 3-1 decision over Dallas Hintz of Wyoming, and Escamilla pinned Jon Mullen of Wayne State. Trent Cox made it to the finals at 133 pounds but had to injury default to Zach Zehner of Wyoming in the finals, settling for runner-up honors.
The Viking-Warrior Open marks the beginning of the 2011 portion of the Mavs' schedule. The following weekend, UNO competes at the Hastings College Open and the NWCA National Duals. Last year, UNO went 5-0 at the National Duals.
