OMAHA, Neb. – The Maverick swim team improved to second place after day three of competition at the Midwestern Collegiate Championships on Friday evening in the UNO HPER Pool. The Mavericks trail St. Cloud State University by only 36 points entering the final day of action on Saturday.
The 200 yard medley relay kicked off the day of scoring for UNO. Sophomore's #Amy Bechdolt#, #Colleen Klaiber and juniors Laura Kemp and Sara Hallgren# won by an arm's length ahead of the SCSU quartet. The Mavs posted a time of 1:45.61, just .37 ahead of the Huskies.
Kemp took the title in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:32.50, a full eight seconds ahead of the second place Tabby Temperely of Minnesota State at 4:40.86. Kemp improved eight seconds from her prelims time of 4:40.28.
In the final event of the night, the UNO 800 yard freestyle relay team pulled ahead of St. Cloud when Bechdolt hit the water in the third leg of the race. She and senior #Tessa Edwards#, junior #Cait Hopkins# and Kemp finished eight seconds ahead of the Huskies with a time of 7:41.00. SCSU finished with a time of 7:49.64.
St. Cloud State continues to lead the pack with a score of 821. UNO comes in a close second with 785 followed by Minnesota State with 685. The University of Colorado swim club kept pace for fourth with 285 ahead of fifth place Morningside College with 218 and College of Saint Mary with 188.
Day four kicks off Saturday morning in the HPER Pool at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 6 p.m.
