OMAHA, Neb. – The Maverick swim team finished in second place after the final day of events in the Midwestern Collegiate Championships hosted by UNO in the HPER Pool. The Mavs finished behind St. Cloud State University.
UNO dominated the 100 yard freestyle with four Mavs finishing in the top six including a first place finish by junior #Cait Hopkins with a time of 51.83 and a third place finish by sophomore Colleen Klaiber with a time of 52.73. Senior Lisa Elworth finished in fifth with a time of 53.02 followed by junior Lucy Zamecnik# in sixth place at 53.41.
The 400 yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Kylie Hubbel, Hopkins, Zamecnik and Klaiber continued to dominate the competition with a first place finish with a time of 3:30.76, two seconds ahead of second place Minnesota State University at Mankato.
The Maverick swim team continued receiving the accolades when Kemp picked up swimmer of the Year. Coach Todd Samland received Coach of the Year as voted on by all of the coaches present.
The finals standings placed SCSU in first with 1,219.5 points, UNO in second with1,180, MSU in third with 983.5, the University of Colorado at Boulder swim club in fourth with 370, Morningside College in fifth with 337 and College of Saint Mary in sixth with 263.
The UNO swimmers will now prepare to travel to Canton, Ohio for the Division Two National Swimming Championships March 10-13 in the C.T. Branin Natatorium.
