Mavs Take Care of Business; Keep Focus on Big Pict

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Mavericks made quick work of their first round competition and they have all 10 of their wrestlers primed to score big points for UNO.
In first place after session one Friday at Sapp Fieldhouse, UNO leads all schools with a team score of 20.0 points. The team recorded four wins by falls, with two pins coming in less than one minute.
Making quick work of San Francisco State's Zachariah Jimenez, sophomore Austin Boehm put away the freshman 184 pounder in a 30 second fall. Boehm, a 2007 All-American will advance to face Kutztown University's Tim Darling in round two.
Off to a fast start, 133 pound senior All-American Cody Garcia realizes that this is only the beginning.
“We've wrestled really well as a team so far, but we just have to take it round by round,” Garcia said.
In a blink of an eye, Garcia a three-time All-American senior recorded a 42-second victory by fall early in the day against UNK senior Joseph Morrison.
“I've wrestled the kid before and he's a returning All-American, so it was important for me to get that first match out of the way,” he said.
The victory improved Garcia's record to 46-0 and was his 30th victory by fall this season.
“It nice to have a great crowd like we have around here,” Garcia said. “It's real convenient for us because it helps our comfort level. At the same time you feel a little more pressure to do well, but I'm really confident in our guys.”
At 149 pounds, All-America sophomore Esai Dominguez followed up Garcia's stellar first round with a quick 2:29 victory by fall over Gannon University senior Kevin McElhaney.
Dominquez, an Omaha native, says he knows that anything can happen at any time in this kind of environment.
“So far, the competition looks really good out there,” Dominguez said. “I just saw the number two-ranked kid in my bracket get beat by a kid that ranked third in our region, so upsets definitely happen out here. I have a lot of faith in our team, we just have to stay on our toes and be ready for what's next. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but if we go out and perform at our best….I think we could have a nice title on the way.”
Adding to the victories for the Mavericks, 285 pound redshirt-freshman Elijah Madison recorded a 4:30 fall over West Liberty State's J.D. Ramsey, giving him his 32nd win of the season.
UNO will also advance six other athletes to the quarterfinals: senior Jacob Marrs (197), redshirt-freshmen Terrell McKinney (125) and George Ivanov (157) and juniors Mario Morgan (141), Ryan Pankoke (165) and Aaron Denson (174).
Dominating the early round, head coach Mike Denney said that he feels good about advancing the team, but stresses that it takes more than just winning one round.
“The thing that I remind the team is that this tournament is two days and four rounds….not one, but four,” Denney said. “We had a goal to get everybody here, and we would have been disappointed if we would have not advanced everyone. I think we are off to a good start, but we have to stay focused on every round to win.”
