Doane Relays Up Next For Maverick Track Team

The Week Ahead: The University of Nebraska at Omaha track and field team will be at Doane College this weekend for the Doane College Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17. Competition begins at 2 p. m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday from Lauritsen Track in Crete, Neb.
The Coaches: Steve Smith is in his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Nebraska at Omaha track program after more than two decades of success as an assistant in Kansas, Nebraska and UNO. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocation Indoor Coach of the Year after guiding the Mavericks to a stunning win in the 2009 MIAA Indoor Championships in March and finished the season fifth in the nation indoors. Smith is assisted by #Chris Richardson# (jumps and pentathlon/heptathlon), John Mulligan (distances) and Rich Emsick (throws).
Hep-Cat: #Shannon Moore# is ranked second in the nation in the heptathlon after a personal best performance last week. Moore finished with a score of 5,261 at the Emporia State Multi Events, the second-best heptathlon score in school history. Along the way, she set personal best marks in the 100 m hurdles (14.26), 200 m (24.89) and the javelin (102-1). Her score leads the MIAA.
Conference Rankings: In addition to Moore, #Maja Mihalinec# has posted the top time in the 200 m this season with a mark of 24.88 at the Nebraska Invite last weekend. In fact, the Mavs have four runners in the top eight in the league in that event. Moore is ranked second, #Kayla Koepke is fourth and Molly Belling# is sixth. Belling is also fifth in the MIAA in the 100 m. Moore ranks third in the 100 meter hurdles, and the UNO 4 x 400 team of #Jolene Smith#, #Megan Oddo#, #Nicole Behm# and Mihalinec rank second.
All-Americans: Six Mavericks are coming off All-American indoor seasons. #Anja Puc and Nkeiruka Domike# were crowned national champions in the 800 meters and the triple jump respectively. Puc ran a time of 2:07.14 to win the 800 and break her own school record of 2:07.99. Domike also reset the school mark in the triple jump with a winning leap of 42 feet, two and one-quarter inches. It was the fifth consecutive meet in which she reset the school record. #Heather Minssen# earned third place in the national indoor meet in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 1 1/2 inches. She will redshirt the outdoor season. Moore took third in the pentathlon with 3,923 points and earned eighth place in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.86. Koepke was fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.64, and Mihalinec took seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.58.
Back In The Fold: Two sprinters who did not compete for the Mavericks outdoors in 2009 will be back on the track this outdoor season. #Pinar Saka#, a seven-time All-American and a 2009 indoor national champion in the 400 and 4x400 will compete outdoors for the final time in her outstanding career. She was the Division II Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2009. Belling also returns to the outdoor track after battling injuries for the last two seasons. She picked up a second-place finish in the 200 and a third in the 100 last week at the Northwest Open.
Up Next: UNO heads to the Drake Relays next week. The Mavericks will compete on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Mavs also will be at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College on Thursday and Friday at Indianola, Iowa.
