Mavericks Show Fruits of Practice at Spring Game

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO head coach Pat Behrns and his staff hoped to see their quarterback of the future emerge from 2010 spring practice. If anything, that decision will get even more scrutiny after the 2010 spring game played on Saturday night. Both John Teigland and Jon Daniels each threw for more than 100 yards on an autumn-like night at Al F. Caniglia Field.
The final score was 24-17 although the game was played as a matchup of first- and second-team offenses against their defensive counterparts.
Teigland went 15-for-21 with a game-high 178 yards and a touchdown. He threw a 27-yard TD pass to Bryce Hawthorne in the third quarter, his longest pass of the day. Teigland also ran for 26 yards.
Daniels threw nine passes on 13 attempts for 137 yards and two scores. He tossed a 20-yard pass to Hawthorne in the first quarter and added a four-yard scoring pass to Grant Otten in the second. He also had 16 rushing yards.
Freshman Drew Scieszinski was eight-for-nine for 100 yards and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Michael Heumann on the last play of the game. Remarkably, Heumann was not the original target but came down with the ball in a crowd of defenders.
Hawthorne, a running back, led all UNO receivers with five catches for 92 yards and the two touchdowns. Heumann had 65 yards on three catches while Brady Lipp caught two passes for 48 yards including the game's longest pass, a 43 yarder from Daniels in the first quarter. Otten and Jonathan Patent also had three catches in the game.
On the ground, Levi Terrell carried eleven times for 63 yards including a hard-fought one-yard run in the second quarter. He also caught two passes for 15 yards. Newcomer Tyrell Carter carried nine times for 27 yards while Hawthorne had seven carries for 21 yards.
Kicker Greg Zuerlein was 2-for-4 on field goals with a 31-yard boot in the first half and a 40 yarder in the second. He also missed long tries of 48 and 58 yards.
Defensively, Tanner Frain led the Mavericks with nine tackles, eight of which were solos. He also had the game's only interception. Bruce Harris made five solo tackles, and Kyle Moore had four.
The Mavericks will open the 2010 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they host in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney at 6 p.m.
