Mavericks Hit Two Meets In Iowa This Weekend

The Week Ahead: The University of Nebraska at Omaha track and field team will compete in the Drake Relays on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Mavs also will be at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College on Thursday and Friday at Indianola, Iowa.
The Coaches: Steve Smith is in his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Nebraska at Omaha track program after more than two decades of success as an assistant in Kansas, Nebraska and UNO. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocation Indoor Coach of the Year after guiding the Mavericks to a stunning win in the 2009 MIAA Indoor Championships in March and finished the season fifth in the nation indoors. Smith is assisted by #Chris Richardson# (jumps and pentathlon/heptathlon), John Mulligan (distances) and Rich Emsick (throws).
Bests By The Bunch: Six Mavericks set personal bests last week at the Doane College Relays. #Kayla Koepke# set a stadium record with a personal best of 56.08 in the 400 meters and registered a PR in the 200 m at 24.79. Koepke's 400 time is the best in the MIAA. #Shannon Moore# ran the 100 m for the first time and ran a qualifying time of 11.99. #Lianne McNaughton# had PRs in the shot put with a distance of 44-8 and in the discus with a throw of 114-1. #Sami Spenner# set personal marks in the long jump (17-9) and triple jump (37-8), and #Madison Haugland# had a personal best throw of 146-2 in the hammer throw, breaking her previous mark by almost seven feet.
Hep-Cat: Moore is ranked third in the nation in the heptathlon after a personal best performance two weeks ago. Moore finished with a score of 5,261 at the Emporia State Multi Events, the second-best heptathlon score in school history. Along the way, she set personal best marks in the 100 m hurdles (14.26), 200 m (24.89) and the javelin (102-1). Her score leads the MIAA.
Conference Rankings: In addition to Koepke and Moore, #Maja Mihalinec# has posted the MIAA's second-best time in the 100 m this season with a time of 11.81 at Doane last week. She has the third-best mark in the 200 m at 24.88. In fact, the Mavs have four runners in the top eight in the league in that event. Koepke is ranked second in the 200 m after her performance last week, Moore is fourth and #Molly Belling# is sixth. Belling is also fifth in the MIAA in the 100 m. #Anja Puc# is second in the league in the 400 m. Moore is all over the leaderboard. Along with her heptathlon and 200 m mark, she ranks third in the 100 meter hurdles, seventh in the 800 meters, eighth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. Spenner is seventh in the triple jump. The UNO 4 x 400 team of #Jolene Smith#, Mihalinec, Puc and Koepke ranks third.
Back In The Fold: Two sprinters who did not compete for the Mavericks outdoors in 2009 are back on the track this outdoor season. #Pinar Saka#, a seven-time All-American and a 2009 indoor national champion in the 400 and 4x400 will compete outdoors for the final time in her outstanding career. She was the Division II Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2009. Belling also returns to the outdoor track after battling injuries for the last two seasons. She picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200 and a fifth in the 100 last week at Doane.
