Moore Takes First on Day One of MIAA Championship

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Senior #Shannon Moore# set a personal best in winning the long jump on the first day of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association track and field outdoor championship. The Mavericks also qualified six more athletes for the finals of five events to be held on Sunday at Pittsburg State.
The Mavs sit in eighth place after the first day of action with 11 points. Central Missouri holds down first with 51 points followed by Pittsburg State (38) and Northwest Missouri State (37).
Moore won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, six inches, shattering her previous personal best outdoors of 18-3 ¾. Her jump qualifies her for the national championship meet and was more than five inches better than runner up Brooke Kent of Emporia State.
Moore also qualified for the finals of the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.02 and the 200 meters with time of 25.51.
The Mavericks qualified four athletes for the 200. #Maja Mihalinec# posted the top qualifying time at 24.61. #Kayla Koepke# was second in the prelims (24.91), #Molly Belling# was third (25.12) and Moore was eighth.
Koepke was the top qualifier in the 400 meters with a time of 56.44. Moore was second in the prelims with a time of 57.02.
Mihalinec also recorded the top preliminary time in the 100 meters, clocking in at 12.16. She is the defending champion in the 100 outdoors. Belling qualified in the sixth spot at 12.23.
#Anja Puc and Jody-Ann Coore# were UNO's other qualifiers. Puc posted a time of 2:15.20 in the 800 meters and will go into Sunday's final as the second seed. Coore will toe the line in the 100 meter hurdle finals in the eighth spot after running a prelim time of 14.68.
In other finals action on Saturday, #Madison Haugland# took eighth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 156 feet, nine inches.
The second day of competition begins Sunday at 12 p.m.
