Mavs Win Six More Events, Take Fourth at MIAAs

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The UNO track and field team won six events on Sunday to earn a fourth-place finish at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association outdoor championship. #Anja Puc and Maja Mihalinec# led the way with two individual wins each in a grueling final day of action.
UNO finished the meet with 112 points, just 1.5 points behind third place Pittsburg State which hosted the meet. Missouri Southern won the outdoor championship with 151 points. Central Missouri finished in second with 117.5 points.
Puc pulled off a remarkable double win, taking first in the 1,500 meters, a race she has run just three times this season, with a time of 4:33.77. A little more than an hour later, she won the 800 meters in a time of 2:11.65, a new record for Pittsburg State's Prentice Gudgen Track.
Mihalinec pulled off an equally stunning feat, winning the 100 meters and 200 meters in less than an hour. She topped all runners in the 100 and in the process defended her own 100 meter title from 2009 in a time of 12.17. Teammate #Molly Belling# finished fifth in the race with a time of 12.33.
Mihalinec and Belling then teamed with #Kayla Koepke# to finish 1-2-3 in the 200. Mihalinec was clocked at 24.92 with Belling in second (25.03) and Koepke in third (25.06). UNO lost a chance to earn additional points when #Shannon Moore# was disqualified for a lane violation.
Koepke earned her own individual win in the 400 meters, topping all runners with a time of 56.54, just edging out Moore who finished second at 56.63.
Moore, Mihalinec, Puc and Koepke then capped off the meet by winning the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:51.08, another stadium record.
In the other relay of the day, the 4 x 100, the Mavericks' newly minted team of #Jody-Ann Coore#, Belling, #Kayla Murphy# and Mihalinec took second place with a time of 48.25.
UNO also got a seventh-place finish from Coore in the 100 meter hurdles (14.77). #Lianne McNaughton# took fifth place in the shot with a throw of 44 feet, four inches, and #Sami Spenner# set a new personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, three and a quarter inches, good for eighth place.
The Mavericks are schedule to compete in the Emporia State Twilight Qualifier on May 15. It will be their last meet before the 2010 NCAA Division II outdoor championship in Charlotte, N.C.
