Mavericks Get High Marks On, Off Field in 2009-10

OMAHA, Neb. – UNO student-athletes set a high standard of achievement both in competition and in the classroom during the 2009-10 athletic season. The Mavericks won yet another national championship in wrestling and earned three more championships in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, all while earning a collective grade point average better than 3.0.
In March, the UNO wrestling team earned its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and its fifth in the last seven years. Freshman Elijah Madison won an individual championship in the heavyweight division. The Maverick grapplers weren't alone in hoisting hardware. In fact, March was a good month for trophies at UNO. The men's basketball team won the MIAA championship in Kansas City during the first weekend of March, just one week after the UNO track and field team took home its second consecutive MIAA indoor title. In April, the Mavericks took home the league's top prize for women's golf for the second year in a row.
Nine of UNO's 15 teams earned a spot in the NCAA postseason including the UNO softball team which made a remarkable 21st straight appearance in the playoffs.
UNO student-athletes earned their share of post-season honors as eighteen Mavericks were named either first or second team All-Americans. Softball's #Lindsey Slocum was named a first team All-American by both Daktronics and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association while baseball's Joe Holtmeyer# was named a first team selection by Daktronics in addition to being named the American Baseball Coaches Association and the MIAA's Pitcher of the Year.
In addition to Slocum and Holtmeyer, track's Anja Puc was a four-time All-American and a two-time national champion after winning the 800 meters both indoors and outdoors. She also ran on UNO's 4x400 meter relay. Her teammates Shannon Moore, Kayla Koepke and Maja Mihalinec each earned indoor and outdoor All-American honors while Heather Minssen and Nkeiruka Domike picked up indoor nods. Football's Mike Higgins was a Daktronics Offensive Second Team All-American while teammate Greg Zuerlein was an American Football Coaches Association All-American. Seven members of the UNO wrestling team picked up All-American honors as well.
The UNO hockey team completed its first season under head coach #Dean Blais# by earning 20 wins for the first time since the 2005-06 season. It was the Mavericks' final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association before moving into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the 2010-11 season. Eleven different Mavs had career years in either goals, assists or points. Eddie DelGrosso was named a First Team All-CCHA member while Terry Broadhurst was named to the All-Rookie team.
In all, thirty-four Mavericks were named to either the first or second team in the MIAA and the CCHA.
