Mavericks Make the Grade in 2009-10

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO Mavericks were no strangers to the Dean's List, demonstrating as keen a focus on academics as athletics during the 2009-10 school year. As a group, the Maverick student-athletes finished the year with a combined grade point average of 3.17 and earned numerous academic honors along the way.
Ninety-eight Mavs were named to the Dean's List during the fall semester. That means they all achieved a GPA of 3.5 or better. Twelve more earned Chancellor's List recognition for earning a perfect 4.0. Those numbers were even better during the spring when 115 UNO athletes were named to the Dean's List and a remarkable 28 made the Chancellor's List.
The UNO volleyball team has made a habit of high achievement in the classroom and that did not change in 2009-10. The Mavs carry a cumulative GPA of 3.65 and had a team GPA of better than 3.7 in each semester. Fifteen volleyball players or 88 percent of the roster made the Dean's List and five made the Chancellor's List.
On the men's side, the UNO baseball team earned high marks with fall and spring GPAs above 3.0. The team put eight players on the Dean's List, more by total roster percentage than any UNO men's team.
UNO student-athletes also earned regional and national academic awards. Tight end Mike Higgins was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American second team. Higgins was one of five UNO football players named to the Academic All-District 7 team. Safety Danny Pelster joined Higgins on the first team while offensive lineman Anthony Sjuts, nose tackle Zac Keller and punter Jason Schlautman all made the second team.
Forward Jessica Powers and goalkeeper Lauren Fox earned similar honors when they were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 First Team for soccer. Sprinter Anja Puc earned the same nod for track. Senior center Jeric Agosta was named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's All-Academic Team.
In addition, 197 Mavericks were named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Academic All-Conference team for earning a GPA of 3.0 or better during the 2009-10 season.
