KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UNO cross country team has been picked to finish eighth in the annual Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association preseason poll.

Southern earned five first-place votes while Truman earned four. Pittsburg State, which finished third in the poll with 67 points, got the other first-place vote.
Northwest Missouri State (49) was picked fourth, Fort Hays State (44) fifth and Central Missouri (42) sixth. After UNO, Emporia State was chosen ninth with 23 points and newcomer Lincoln University (10) was in tenth.
UNO was sixth in last year's MIAA championship meet, led by Megan Oddo who finished 19th overall. The Mavs then finished in seventh place in the NCAA South Central Regional.
The Mavericks sport a new coach this season as Marc Bierbaum joins the staff as an assistant to head coach Steve Smith. Bierbaum comes to UNO from Dana College where he was the head cross country coach for three and a half years. Prior to that, he was the head cross country and assistant track coach at Westside High School from 2002-06.
UNO opens the 2010 season by co-hosting the UNO/Creighton Classic on Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Chili Greens complex.
