UNO Golf Team Begins New Season on Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO Mavericks begin the defense of their Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title when the 2010-11 season begins Thursday at the Iowa Western Fall Invite. The Mavs are the two-time champions of the MIAA.
Last season, the Mavericks won six tournaments and finished as the runner up in two others. Their win in the MIAA Championship was convincing as they finished 43 strokes better than runner up Truman during the two-day event. The win also brought head coach #Tim Nelson# his second MIAA Coach of the Year award.
The Mavericks return six letterwinners from last year's team led by senior #Dani Suponchick#. She posted a 78.8 stroke average for the season, second behind #Erin Ommen# who has concluded her eligibility and will serve as a student assistant this season. Suponchick was an individual medalist twice including posting the best score (154) at the MIAA championship.
Juniors #Rebecca Pollock and Armana Christianson# ranked fourth and fifth in team scoring last season with nearly identical stroke averages of 81.0 and 81.1 respectively. Each player also medaled last year.
#Amy Powell#, #Ricca Soper and Elizabeth Havekost# round out the group of returning letterwinners. #Melyssa Doerr# did not play last season because of injury and will be a redshirt freshman this year.
The Mavericks welcome two incoming freshmen to this year's team. Brooke Thilges was a four-year letterwinner and captain as a senior for Manhattan High School in Kansas. Millard West product #Christina VonRiesen# set her school's record for lowest stroke average while qualifying for the state tournament in all four years.
The Mavs will take part in seven tournaments this fall including hosting their only home event of the season, the UNO Fall Classic at The Pines Country Club in Valley, Neb. on Oct. 4 and 5.
