Escamilla Named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO junior heavyweight Taylor Escamilla was named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week this week, after helping lift the Mavericks to a third straight Division II team title at the NWCA National Duals on Sunday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
At 285 pounds, the Fremont, Neb., native recorded a 2-1 semifinal win in overtime against Newberry's Jake Elkins to advance the Mavs to the championship dual. In the finals, Augustana (S.D.) led UNO 15-14 entering the final heavyweight match, and Escamilla came through in the clutch again with a 3-1 win over Lance Peters, rallying UNO to a 17-15 finals victory.
Originally slated to play football at the University of Nebraska, Escamilla eventually transferred to UNO to wrestle for head coach Mike Denney. This year Escamilla has compiled a 21-9 record (2-2 in duals) and has a 72-33 career record as a Maverick. Escamilla owns two open wins this season.
