No. 1 Mavericks Host Brand Open on Sunday
The top-ranked UNO wrestling team will host the annual Brand Open at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. Last season, the Mavericks finished the open with one individual title by former UNO All-American Cody Garcia (133), and second-place marks by Tim Chavez (141), Austin Boehm (184) and Blake Long (197).
What Happened Last Time Out
The No. 1 Mavs won their third straight NWCA National Duals title on Sunday, Jan. 9, with a 17-15 win over No. 3 seed Augustana (S.D.) at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
UNO finished the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record in the duals. Mario Morgan (141), George Ivanov (157) and Ryan Pankoke (174) all went 4-0 on the weekend, and three Mavericks - Esai Dominguez (149), Aaron Denson (184) and Matt Baker (197) - finished with records of 3-1.
Morgan avenged last year's national championship loss to Augustana's Jay Sherer with a 4-2 win over Sherer to get the Mavs on the board against Augustana.
UNO also recieved a huge lift from Ivanov, who won an 8-6 decision in overtime over Marcus Edgington. Ivanov rallied from behind to force overtime, then earned the sudden victory by way of a takedown. The win improved the sophomore to 17-3 on the year.
Tyler Copsey's win at 197 pounds gave Augustana a 15-14 lead going into the final heavyweight match-up between UNO's Taylor Escamilla and Augustana's Lance Peters.
The fifth-ranked Escamilla, who earlier in the day had won a sudden victory match to advance the Mavs to the finals, came through again for UNO, earning the 3-1 decision over Peters to win the trophy for the Mavs.
UNO Remains No.1 in Latest D-II Poll
As two-time defending national champions, the Mavericks started the regular season unanimously atop the first NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, released on Dec. 8.
In the latest Divsion II rankings released on Jan. 4, Esai Dominguez (149) and George Ivanov (157) each represented the Mavs at the top of their respective weight rankings. Mario Morgan (141) remained No. 2 in the country, while Ryan Pankoke jumped one spot to No. 3 at 174 pounds. Aaron Denson was fourth at 184, and Taylor Escamilla moved up to fifth at 285 pounds.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 32nd season as the Mavericks head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 306-110-5 career mark. He has been named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010 Mavericks to an NCAA Division II national championship.

The Mavs host Augsburg College on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. Last season, the Mavericks had their 18-straight dual win streak snapped at Augsburg, losing 18-12 to the Divison III host Auggies.
