Eight Mavs Earn Titles at Viking-Warrior Open

FREMONT, Neb. -- Eight UNO wrestlers earned titles at the Viking-Warrior Open on Sunday, hosted by Midland University.
Esai Dominguez won his fifth open title of the year at 149 pounds, splitting a co-championship with UNO teammate Tait Weatherbee. The two advanced to the finals but did not battle for the title. Dominguez improved to 21-2 on the year.
Ryan Pankoke swept his way to the title at 174 pounds, concluding with a 9-5 decision in the finals. Pankoke, who has won three straight opens, sits at 22-2 on the year.
Mario Morgan and Taylor Escamilla each captured their second consecutive open titles. Morgan won the 141-pound weight bracket with a 10-3 decision in the finals. Escamilla took the 285-pound title with a 3-1 decision.
Aaron Denson dominated the field at 184 pounds with a major decision and two falls. The win was Denson's second of the season and first since the season-opening Daktronics Open. Maverick teammate Mark Fiala took third at 184 pounds with a 3-1 record on the day.
George Ivanov also captured his second open title of the year at 157 pounds. Ivanov won a 5-4 decision in the finals to improve to 13-3 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Cody Tyler garnered his first open title this season at 125 pounds, going 4-0 on the day with two pins and two wins by decision. Tyler improved to 20-7 this year for UNO.
Among other Maverick wrestlers who placed, Josh Keszler, wrestling unattached, took second at 133 pounds, Nathan Sigman placed second at 165 pounds, Matt Baker finished second at 197 pounds, and Trent Cox took third at 133 pounds. Josh Heckendorn, Terry Laursen, Zack Wilcox and Joey Moorhouse (unattached) also participated.
UNO wrestles again this Saturday at the Hastings College Open and the NWCA National Duals.
