Mavs Open Home Duals With 21-12 Win Over Augsburg

OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 1 UNO wrestling team won its 13th straight dual with a 21-12 victory over Augsburg, ranked No. 3 in Division III, on Thursday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
Augsburg was the last team to defeat UNO in a dual, when they won 18-12 back on Jan. 22, 2010. This time around, UNO got a big six-point injury default win from No. 1 Mario Morgan at 141 pounds and picked up key victories over ranked opponents at 174 and 184 pounds to claim the win.
The Auggies' Josh Roberts gave his team the early lead with an 11-5 victory over Cody Tyler at 125 pounds.
Trent Cox recorded an early takedown of Boyd Suparat, then got four points on near falls to take a 6-0 lead early in the first period. Cox held on the rest of the way for a 10-4 victory to get the Mavs on the board at 133 pounds for the first time in five dual matches this season.
Cox's win set the stage for Morgan, fresh off being named No. 1 in the nation at 141 pounds this week. Morgan took the lead midway through the second period over Cody Hansen (No. 10 DIII) with two near-fall points, then earned a takedown to start the third period that ended Hansen's night with an injury. Morgan improved to 16-4 with the win and has won 28 straight dual matches for the Mavs.
At 149 pounds, No. 1 Esai Dominguez squared off against No. 3 (DIII) Tony Valek. The two remained scoreless through two periods. Dominguez surrendered an escape to Valek to start the third period, then took Valek down with just under a minute left. Valek escaped, however, and won 3-2 with a riding time point.
At 157 pounds, No. 1 George Ivanov improved to 18-3 on the year with a 5 -2 victory over Jon Priess at 157 pounds. Ivanov's win gave UNO a 12-6 lead at the midway point of the dual.
Orlando Ponce, ranked second in Division III, defeated Nathan Sigman at 165 pounds, 4-1. Ponce's win drew Augsburg within three at 12-9.
At 174 pounds, No. 3 Ryan Pankoke earned a 5-2 decision over No. 2 (DIII) Zach Molitor to move the Mavs to a 15-9 lead. Pankoke improved to 27-2 on the year, paving the way for No. 3 Aaron Denson at 184 pounds. Denson claimed a 4-1 lead late in the second period over Brad Baus (No. 6 DIII) by way of a reversal, then made it 8-1 with four near-fall points in the third period. Denson allowed a reversal, but held on for the 8-3 win to improve to 20-5 on the season and give UNO an 18-9 advantage.
2009 DIII national champion and No. 3 Jared Massey then defeated No. 8 Matt Baker at 197 pounds, 6-5. Massey scored a takedown with 35 seconds left to take a 6-4 lead, and a late escape by Baker didn't matter in the end.
No. 8 Taylor Escamilla closed out the dual with a 5-0 decision over Augsburg freshman Niko Bogojevic.
The Mavs are at home again on Friday night, as No. 3 St. Cloud State comes to the Sapp Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. match. That dual pits UNO Head Coach Mike Denney against his former wrestler and three-time All-American for UNO, Steve Costanzo, who is in his fifth season as the Huskies head coach.
