UNO Swims to First on Opening Day of Grinnell Invi

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The UNO swimming & diving team sits in first place after day one of the Grinnell Invitational, having amassed 613.5 points and winning two individual events. Entering Saturday's competition, the Mavericks have a substantial lead over second-place Gustavus Adolphus (496) and third-place Luther College (384).
UNO had three teams place in the top five of the 200 yard freestyle relay, with freshmen #Kylie Rathbone#, #Erin Wright#, #Whitney Korgan and Tiesha Scipio# taking second place with a time of 1:41.74. Rathbone then won the 200 IM (2:09.82) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:23.59)
Scipio was also runner-up in the 100 yard freestyle (54.39), while freshman #Maddie Hutt# took third (5:22.32) in the 500 yard freestyle. In the 200 yard butterfly, sophomore #Katie Keen# (2:20.15), sophomore #Mattie Fosbender# (2:20.61) and junior #Colleen Klaiber# (2:21.11) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
Junior #Amy Bechdolt# tallied second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.74), then helped the 800 freestyle relay team -- along with Klaiber, junior #Kylie Hubbell and senior Cait Hopkins# -- swim to a second-place showing in 8:01.43.
The 400 yard medley relay capped the day, and the Mavericks took second behind Scipio, Hutt, Rathbone and Korgan, who raced to a mark of 4:08.59.
On the diving side, junior #Amanda Schulte# finished fourth (380.10) in the one-meter competition.
UNO returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 22. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
