Laidley Sets School High Jump Record at Northern I

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Freshman #Kathie-Lee Laidley# broke an 11-year-old school record in the high jump to help the Mavericks to a 1-2 finish in the pentathlon on the first day of the Jack Jennett Invitational at Northern Iowa.
Laidley broke the record in her first jump of the event, clearing 5-10. That broke the old school record of 5-8 ¼ set by Sandy Derby in 1999. That was the top mark among all athletes in the high jump.
Laidley won the event, finishing with 3,390 points, just ahead of teammate #Sami Spenner# who finished with 3,273. Both were competing in the pentathlon for the first time.
Laidley, a freshman from Portmore, Jamaica, also took first in the long jump at 17-11. She was second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.24 and also had a fifth-place finish in the shot put (32-7 ¾). She finished last in the 800 meters with a time of 3:00.24.
Spenner won the 800 in a time of 2:34.01 and had second-place finishes in the high jump (5-0 ½) and the long jump (17-9 ¾). She was sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.62) and the shot put (31-3 ¾).
The meet continues with the individual events beginning tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the UNI-Dome.
