The No. 1 UNO wrestling team embarks upon its first dual matches of the season at the NWCA National Duals at the UNI Dome on the Northern Iowa campus this weekend. Matches will begin Saturday morning and conclude Sunday afternoon. UNO starts off against Minnesota State-Moorhead at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Mavs will then either face Upper Iowa or No. 8 Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Sixteen teams will compete, including seven other Top 10 teams: No. 2 St. Cloud State (Minn.), No. 3 Augustana (S.D.), No. 4 Western State (Colo.), No. 5 Newberry (S.C.), No. 7 Minnesota State-Mankato, No. 9 Central Oklahoma and No. 10 Grand Canyon (Ariz.).
Other teams in this weekend's field include: No. 11 Upper Iowa, No. 12 Wisconsin-Parkside, No. 13 North Carolina-Pembroke, No. 14 Findlay (Ohio), No. 20 San Francisco State, Central Missouri, Limestone (S.C.) and Minnesota State-Moorhead.
Ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds, Esai Dominguez will look to lead the Mavs to their third straight NWCA National Duals title. The junior from Omaha, Neb., is 21-1 on the year and possesses five open titles this season.
George Ivanov is also ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds. Ivanov, a sophomore, is 13-3 and has won two open titles. Ivanov went 4-0 in the event last year.
Four other Mavs who are ranked will look to make a big impact this weekend as well: Mario Morgan (No. 2, 141), Ryan Pankoke (No. 3, 174), Aaron Denson (No. 4, 184), and Taylor Escamilla (No. 5, 285).
The Mavs went 4-0 at the duals last year to win their second straight title and fifth all-time.
