Mavericks Ready To Defend MIAA Indoor Title

OMAHA, Neb. - The fourth-ranked UNO track and field team will head to Warrensburg, Mo. this weekend for the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Championship. The meet is being held at Central Missouri. The Mavericks are the two-time defending MIAA champions indoors.
The Mavericks head into competition this weekend with the MIAA's top-ranked athletes in the 800 meters (#Anja Puc#), the high jump (#Kathie-Lee Laidley#) and the long and triple jumps (#Nkeiruka Domike#). UNO also has the second-ranked athletes in the mile (Puc), long jump (Laidley) and the shot put (#Heather Minssen#).
Puc won the 800 m at last year's indoor championship on her way to also winning the MIAA outdoor 800 title. She completed a remarkable feat last year, also racing to the national championship in the event both indoors and outdoors.
Puc leads the MIAA and is second in the country with a time of 2:09.82.
Domike is the defending national champion in the triple jump and is also the defending champion in the MIAA which she won by almost two feet last year in Joplin, Mo.
This year, Domike leads the nation in the triple jump with a Division II-record jump of 45-1 3/4, nearly five feet longer than the next athlete. In the long jump, Domike, competing in the event for the first time in North America this year, leads the MIAA with a jump of 19-3 1/2, a mark that's second best in the nation.
Laidley, a freshman, has been a pleasant surprise for UNO. She's already broken the school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-10 back in January. She's tied with Missouri Southern's Lisa Vengels for the top mark in the MIAA this season and is in a three-way tie for second in the nation.
Laidley also ranks second in the long jump, less than three inches behind teammate Domike's mark.
Minssen posted her season-best throw in the shot put last week at the Nebraska Tune-Up when she threw 47-9 1/4. That puts her second in the MIAA behind Nicole Green of Missouri Southern. Minssen ranks seventh in the country with that mark.
Junior #Maja Mihalinec# is the defending MIAA indoor champion in the 200 meters. She enters competition this weekend with a season-best time of 24.75 which ranks third among all MIAA athletes.
The Mavericks will be supremely tested by MIAA newcomer Lincoln University, which is the defending NCAA Division II indoor champion, and traditional MIAA powers Missouri Southern and Central Missouri. All four teams were in the top 25 teams ranked by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week. Lincoln is the top-ranked MIAA team, coming in second nationally behind Grand Valley State. UNO moved up one spot to fourth while Central Missouri is eighth, Fort Hays State is 17th, Missouri Southern is 18th and Pittsburg State is 21st.
The MIAA Indoor Championship begins on Friday, Feb. 25th at 3 p.m. with the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon.
