UNO Wrestlers at Briar Cliff Open
MANKATO, Minn. - Seven Mavericks reigned victorious Friday, as the top-ranked UNO wrestling team improved its dual record to 8-1 on the season, pulling away with a 22-12 victory over No. 8 Minnesota State on the road Friday.
UNO fell early in the opening 125-pound match when Cody Tyler was pinned at 2:40 by Andy Forstner, giving Minnesota State (8-4) an early 6-0 lead.
133-pounder Trent Cox put UNO on the board with a 7-2 decision over David Demo, bringing the Mavericks back to within a 6-3 deficit.
Tim Chavez (141) then fell to Minnesota State's Robby Fisher in a 10-8 decision, putting UNO behind 9-3. Chavez was filling in for top-ranked Mario Morgan who sat out the dual with an illness.
No.1-ranked 149-pounder Esai Dominguez then revived the Mavericks with a 14-6 major decision over Jesse Westphal, bringing them within two points at 9-7.
Top-ranked George Ivanov gave UNO its first lead of the night, as he defeated 157-pounder Tel Todd in a 3-1 decision, putting the Mavericks up 10-9. UNO then reeled off two more victories with Nathan Sigman defeating Brendan Eichmann in a 5-3 decision, and No. 3 Ryan Pankoke knocking off No. 6 Ben Becker in a 10-4 decision.
Trailing 16-9, Minnesota State's No. 6 Aaron Norgren defeated No. 3 Aaron Denson in a 3-1 decision to narrow the lead to just 16-12 going into the final two matches.
UNO's No. 4 Matt Baker (197) escaped from a 30-second ride against No. 7 Pat Mahan, earning the 2-1 sudden victory to give the Mavericks a 19-12 cushion.
Heavyweight No. 7 Taylor Escamilla finished off the dual with a 3-2 decision over Nate Haynes to give UNO the 22-12 dual victory.
UNO will now get ready to host the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Duals at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Sunday, Feb. 13 at Noon.
