KEARNEY, Neb. - The No. 1 UNO wrestling team earned 12.0 points after the first round of the NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday morning to take the early lead in the team race.
The Mavs are followed by Western State with 10.0 points and Augustana and St. Cloud State, each with 9.0 points. The second round and consolation rounds begin Friday at 6 p.m., at the UNK Health & Sports Center.
The two-time defending national champions sent eight of 10 wrestlers into the quarterfinals, the most of any team in the competition. The Mavs' suffered a surprising setback though, as top-ranked George Ivanov was upset at 157 pounds by Winston Robbins of Upper Iowa, 11-9. Ivanov led 9-8 late in the match, but Robbins, with the riding time bonus point technically making the score 9-9, got Ivanov on his back with just a few seconds remaining for two points to steal the win.
The only other Mav to fall in the first round was Nathan Sigman, who was defeated at 165 pounds by No. 1 Mike Williams of UNC-Penbroke, 6-1.
The rest of the Mavs are still alive in the championship bracket. Josh Keszler won by forfeit at 125 pounds. Trent Cox avenged a dual loss to Eric Ellington of St. Cloud State with a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds. No. 1 Mario Morgan fought back from an early deficit to defeat Simon Rice of Shippensburg, 9-4, at 141 pounds. Top-ranked Esai Dominguez earned a dominating 17-5 major decision win over Matthew Thomas of San Francisco State at 149 pounds.
Following the back-to-back losses by Ivanov and Sigman, No. 1 Ryan Pankoke got UNO back on the board at 174 pounds with a 9-3 decision against Trent Zempel of Chadron State. No. 3 Aaron Denson added bonus points then with an 8-0 major decision over Craig Draper-Johnson of Southwest Minnesota State at 184 pounds. Fourth-ranked Matt Baker advanced to the quarterfinals at 197 pounds with a 3-2 decision over Eddie Ebewo of East Stroudsburg.
At heavyweight, Taylor Escamilla closed out the first round with a 3-2 overtime victory over Ben Hohensee of UNK. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Escamilla got a two-point reversal from the down position in the first tiebreaker. Hohensee then got a one-point escape from the down position in the second half of the tiebreaker, but Escamilla eliminated all of Hohensee's attacks and held on for the 3-2 win.
