Pankoke Becomes Fourth Top-Ranked Maverick Wrestle

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO senior wrestler Ryan Pankoke took over the No. 1 spot at 174 pounds in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released on Wednesday.
Pankoke joins three other Mavs who are ranked atop their respective weights - Mario Morgan (141), Esai Dominguez (149) and George Ivanov (157).
Pankoke, a Beaver Crossing, Neb., native who was previously ranked third, is 37-2 on the year and has won 30 straight matches. His only two losses this season are to Division I wrestlers from Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
In addition to the four top-ranked wrestlers, senior Aaron Denson is No. 3 at 184 pounds, and sophomore Matt Baker remained fourth at 197 pounds. Pankoke, Morgan, Dominguez, Ivanov and Denson all won the NCAA Super Region 2 title last weekend, while Baker finished second.
Nebraska-Omaha received all eight first-place votes to remain No. 1 in the team rankings. The Mavs were the only school to qualify all 10 wrestlers for the national tournament, set for March 11-12 in Kearney.
St. Cloud State, the only team to defeat the Mavs in a dual this year, moved up to No. 2 in the team rankings. Newberry moved up to third, while Augustana dropped from second to fourth.
