Denney Named InterMat Coach of the Year

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO wrestling head coach Mike Denney was voted InterMat Coach of the Year for 2011 on Thursday, edging out Cael Sanderson of Division I national champion Penn State and NWCA National Coach of the Year, Mark Cody of American.
Denney, who led the Mavs to their third straight NCAA Division II national championship, beat out Sanderson by one point in a vote determined by InterMat writers and executives to determine the top college wrestling coach across all divisions.
The award marks the first time Denney has been honored by InterMat. Denney was named the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1981, 1991 and 2009. Denney received seven of 14 first-place votes to garner 76 total points. Sanderson received 75 points and five first-place votes. Cody received the other two first-place votes and totaled 71 points.
Denney finished his 32nd year at the helm at UNO with his seventh DII national championship and sixth in the last eight years. He possesses a career dual record of 314-111-5 (.730) and has coached 181 Division II All-Americans and 33 national champions. This past season, Denney led the Mavericks to a 12-1 dual record while coaching seniors Mario Morgan, Ryan Pankoke and Aaron Denson to national championships. The Mavericks won the team title by 12 points over St. Cloud State.
