KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Led by two of its seniors, the UNO golf team raced out to the lead after the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship. Both Dani Suponchick and Amy Powell posted identical rounds of 76 to tie for the overall lead at the Tiffany Greens Golf Club.
The Mavericks posted a team score of 313 after the first 18 holes, 25 strokes better than second-place Missouri Western at 338. Truman State is third at 346 followed by Fort Hays State (349), Northwest Missouri State (360) and Lincoln (365).
Suponchick and Powell matched each other stroke for stroke, posting 38s on the front and back of the 6,173-yard layout. Armana Christianson is third in scoring for the Mavericks and overall after a round of 80 on Monday.
Rebecca Pollock is fourth for UNO and tied with Truman State's Jennifer Lawson for fourth overall at 81. Ricca Soper was fifth for UNO and ninth overall with a first-round score of 83.
The Mavericks are the two-time defending MIAA champions, having won the tournament in each of their first two years in the league. Round two begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m.
