Minssen Nabs Second MIAA Track and Field Honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior thrower Heather Minssen was named the co-winner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Track and Field student-athlete of the week award for the field events on Wednesday. It is the second time she's been so honored.
Minssen shared the award with Missouri Southern's Lisa Vengels.
Minssen competed in the shot put and discus in two meets last weekend in California, finishing in the top-five in three of the four events. On Friday, Minssen set the top mark in the MIAA in the discus with a throw of 152-11 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Asuza Pacific. It was a new PR and ranks as the seventh-best throw in the nation this season. The mark was good for third place in a field of 45 throwers. She was also third out of 40 in the shot put at the same meet, posting a mark of 47-4 ¼.
On Saturday at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State, Minssen was fourth out of 57 athletes in the shot put, bettering her mark from the day before by throwing 47-9 ¾. She was 16th out of 62 in the discus at 151-3. To begin the week, Minssen ranks first in the MIAA in both the shot put and the discus and ranks second nationally in the shot in addition to ranking seventh nationally in the discus.
The Mavericks return to action in two meets this weekend. They'll take part in the Doane College Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23. They'll also compete in the John McDonald Invite at Arkansas on Saturday.
