PITTSBURG, Kan. - UNO sophomore Sami Spenner set two personal bests and had UNO's top score, holding down fourth place after the first day of competition at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Heptathlon Championship. The athletes battled extreme conditions with rain and temperatures in the low 40s.
Spenner compiled 2,798 points on the first day of competition at Pittsburg State's Carnie Smith Stadium. Central Missouri's Lindsey Lettow, the 2011 NCAA indoor athlete of the year, was in first place with 3,193 points. Teammate Zoe Sharplin is second (2,990) and another Jennie, Erin Alewine is third (2,958).
The final day of competition is Monday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meter dash.
Spenner clocked a time of 15.67 in the 100 meter hurdles, her first pr. She finished in a three-way tie for third in the high jump with a leap of 5-2 1/2. In the shot put, she threw for a mark of 32-0 1/4, fourth-best among the 15 competitors. She finished the day with a time of 25.91 in the 200 meters which also ranked fourth in the event. It was her second pr of the day.
UNO's Ckalyn Roth-Clark (14th) and Jessica Ripp (15th) are also competing in the heptathlon. The competition is a precursor to the MIAA outdoor championships next weekend at Emporia State.
