Mavericks Land Two on All-Region Track and Field T

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior thrower Heather Minssen and sophomore multi-eventer Sami Spenner were named to the National Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-South Central Region team today.
Minssen earned the nod for her performances in the shot put and discus while Spenner was chosen for the heptathlon.
Minssen set the school record in the shot put at the MIAA Outdoor Championship on May 7, becoming the first UNO athlete to throw for 50 feet or more. Her mark of 50-03 1/2 broke her own school record set earlier in the year at 49-05. She also earned the record in the discus at the same meet, throwing for 160-07 and breaking the old record that had stood since 1997 by two feet. She was the MIAA champ in both events.
Minssen currently ranks in a tie for second nationally in the shot put and sixth in the discus and will compete for the Mavs in the NCAA Division II outdoor championship on May 26-28.
She also won the shot put at the MIAA Indoor Championship and holds the school record indoors in the event at 49-02 1/4. Minssen is a two-time All-American indoors in the shot put.
In March, she was named to the NTFCCCA All-Region Indoor team.
Spenner turned in an outstanding performance in the MIAA Heptathlon Championship on May 1-2. In her first season competing in the event, she finished third with 4,850 points. She set personal bests in four of the seven events including the 100 meter hurdles (15.67), the 200 m dash (25.91), the long jump (18-6) and the 800 m (2:22.59).
She currently ranks 12th in the country in the heptathlon and also will compete for the Mavericks at the NCAA outdoor championship.
