Spenner Surges To Third at MIAA Heptathlon Champio

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Sophomore Sami Spenner won the final event of the day to earn third place at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Heptathlon Championship on Tuesday at Pittsburg State.
Competing in the heptathlon for the first time this season, Spenner finished with 4,850 points, trailing only Central Missouri's Lindsey Lettow (5,225) and Erin Alewine (4,897). She earned six points toward the Mavericks' team score for the MIAA outdoor championship which will be held at Emporia State on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8.
Spenner is now ranked sixth in the nation in the heptathlon and has qualified for the NCAA outdoor championship.
Spenner moved from fifth to third by winning the final event of the day, the 800 meters. She finished in a personal best time of 2:22.59, edging Northwest Missouri State's Adrienne Cornelius by three-tenths of a second.
Spenner also won the long jump with another pr of 18-6, just ahead of Lettow by three-quarters of an inch. In the day's other event, she threw 106-3 in the javelin.
UNO's Ckalyn Roth-Clark finished 13th, and Jessica Ripp was 14th in the competition.
