Richardson Earns Regional Coaching Honor

NEW ORLEANS, La. - UNO assistant track and field coach Chris Richardson has been named the South Central Regional Division II women's assistant coach of the year. Richardson, in his fifth year with the Mavericks, will now be one of eight finalists for the national Coach of the Year award.
Richardson, who coaches field and multi events for UNO, has coached several Mavericks to record-breaking years in 2010-11. He coached Nkeiruka Domike to her second indoor national championship in the triple jump back in March. Along the way, Domike set the top triple jump mark, indoors or outdoors, in Division II history at 45-01 3/4. Her only loss in the event all year was to the eventual Division I indoor champion.
In all, Richardson has coached UNO athletes to indoor All-American status in the long jump, triple jump, high jump and shot put.
This spring, Richardson has coached Heather Minssen to school records in the shot put (50-03 1/2) and discus (160-07). Minssen won the MIAA indoor and outdoor shot put championship, and she finished fifth in the event at the NCAA indoor championship this season. She will go to the NCAA outdoor championship next week ranked second in the nation in the shot put and sixth in the discus.
Richardson, a native of Boulder, Colo., also guided sophomore Sami Spenner to a third-place finish in the heptathlon at the MIAA Championships earlier this month. This is Spenner's first season competing in the heptathlon. She, too, has qualified for the NCAA outdoor championship.
So far this outdoor season, his athletes have set five school records.
Richardson is a 2004 graduate of Nebraska where he was the 2004 Big 12 champion in the heptathlon. He was a two-time captain, a four-year letter winner and a four-time selection to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
The Mavericks will compete in the Division II outdoor championship on May 26 and 27 in Turlock, Calif.
