Mavericks Ready For NCAA Outdoor Championship

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO track and field team will conclude its season this weekend when it travels to the NCAA Division II outdoor championship in Turlock, Calif. Senior Heather Minssen and sophomore Sami Spenner will represent the Mavs in the meet which is being held at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium on the campus of California State Stanislaus.
The meet runs from Thursday - Saturday, May 26-28. The track team is the last UNO team still competing in the 2010-11 academic year.
Minssen has had a superlative senior season. She will head to the national meet ranked second in the nation in the shot put and sixth in the discus. She set the school records in the shot put (50-03 1/2) and the discus (160-07) at the MIAA Championship on May 7. She won both events and in the process became the first 50-foot shot putter in UNO history.
She was twice named the MIAA field student-athlete of the week during the spring.
Minssen's performance outdoors is no surprise. She was equally strong during the indoor season, winning the MIAA indoor shot put title and placing fifth in the NCAA Division II indoor championship. She set the school record in the shot put indoors last season with a throw of 49-02 1/4.
Spenner has been a surprise for the Mavericks competing in the multi events. She finished third in the heptathlon at the MIAA outdoor championship with 4,850 points. In the process, she set personal bests in four events including the 100 meter hurdles (15.67), the 200 m dash (25.91), the long jump (18-6) and the 800 m (2:22.59). She is ranked 12th in the nation in the event.
Both athletes were named to the National Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-South Central Region team last week. Minssen also earned the same honor indoors this season.
Spenner will compete first for the Mavericks as the heptathlon begins on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT with the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters. She'll finish on Friday at 1 p.m. CT with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
Minssen will compete in the shot put finals on Friday at 9:30 p.m. CT.
