Spenner Surges To Finish Fifth at NCAA Championshi

TURLOCK, Calif. - Sami Spenner finished a remarkable outdoor campaign with a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championship on Friday. The sophomore from Columbus, Neb. began the day in tenth place but closed strong to earn All-American status.
Also today, senior Heather Minssen took second place in the shot put, jumping three places with her fourth throw, hitting 49-09 3/4.
Spenner finished the heptathlon with 5,085 points, just 13 points out of fourth. She had been ranked 12th in the nation entering the championship. She was one of three MIAA athletes to finish in the top five. Central Missouri's Lindsay Lettow won the national championship with 5,514 points while her teammate, Erin Alewine, was third with 5,133. Spenner's point total ranks fourth all-time in UNO history.
Spenner took sixth place in the long jump, the first event of the day, with a leap of 18-01 3/4. She posted a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 120-08. It came on her third throw of the event and earned her a third-place finish.
She finished the day with a time of 2:22.65 in the 800 meters to come in sixth.
Spenner had five prs in the seven events of the heptathlon. She had one in each of the four events in day one.
Earlier this month, Spenner earned All-MIAA honors by finishing third in the heptathlon at the MIAA championship. This is her first year competing in the event.
Minssen also earns All-American status with the second-place finish in the shot put, the third All-American nod in her career. She will compete in the discus on Saturday where she is seeded sixth in the nation in the event.
