NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship Day 3

Weather Derails Minssen at Outdoor Championship
May 28, 2011 | General, Track & Field
TURLOCK, Calif. - The weather proved too much to overcome for senior Heather Minssen who did not advance beyond the prelims of the discus at the NCAA Division II outdoor championship. Colder than normal temperatures prevented all but one athlete in the first flight from advancing to the finals.
Minssen came to the outdoor championship ranked sixth in the discus. UNO sent just two competitors to the meet, but both Minssen in the shot put and Sami Spenner in the heptathlon scored to earn All-American honors. Minssen picked up second place in the shot yesterday while Spenner was fifth in the heptathlon after coming to the meet ranked 12th in the nation.
Minssen finishes her superlative career at UNO as a three-time All-American. She earned two of those this season, finishing fifth in the shot put indoors this year. She was also an indoor All-American during the 2010 indoor season.
Minssen also has the distinction of being the last UNO athlete to compete in a Division II sport. The Mavericks begin their reclassification to Division I in July.
